(April 3, 2020) – North American Lighting’s (NAL) Equipment Plant delivered its first batch of 3D printed face shields to local health care personnel in Illinois and will continue production to meet ongoing needs in local communities.
Team Members responded to the shortage of proper health care PPE by putting a production plan together to fabricate and assemble face shields for personnel combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first batch of face shields were made using a 3D printed visor piece and bottom connector, a clear plastic face mask and an elastic strap. After reviewing their first week’s production, the team found ways to improve cycle time by more than 50% to fabricate 28 face shields per day.
“We are overwhelmed by the kindness and support our Team Members are showing our communities,” said Ovie Gaither, Assistant General Manager of Manufacturing Engineering. “The Illinois Equipment Plant (IEP) in Flora, IL will continue to support the medical teams on the front lines with these fabricated face shields, so long as resources allow.”
To date, NAL has supplied face shields to Clay County Hospital, Salem Hospital and Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital, and has since received additional requests from hospitals including Horizon Health.
Other Team Member initiated, in-kind donations have included nearly 20,000 disposable gloves to health care personnel.
